Merchiston Courses - Classroom Space

Students are invited to rehearse and perform the St Kilda Suite by Isobel Mieras in our Wednesday afternoon concert. There are 4 movements portraying the extraordinary way of life of the inhabitants of this isolated archipelago, including their dependence on the thousands of seabirds returning there each summer. The final movement, Farewell to St Kilda, was played in the From Scratch event at last year’s Festival. The music, which will be sent out in advance, has parts for all abilities as well as opportunities for some improvisation. Your chance to share the experience of the hard work-- and fun --of rehearsing and refining music to a performance level.

Tutor: Isobel Mieras - After more than 50 years of teaching experience, Isobel particularly enjoys working with harp ensembles and groups, encouraging players of all ages and levels to join together to create interesting, dynamic and musical performances. For her many suites, composed and arranged for Na Clarsairean, The Scottish Harp Orchestra, she draws inspiration from Scotland’s turbulent history and ruggedly beautiful landscape, always ensuring that simple and more challenging parts are of equal importance. She is currently President of The Clarsach Society and, along with Patsy Seddon, Artistic Adviser to EIHF.
