T31 Gaelic Songs For All

5-days from Sat 6th to Wed 10th April - 1:00pm

Merchiston Courses - Classroom Space

Whether you’re a fluent Gaelic speaker or fancy trying something completely new, at ease singing on the big stage or prefer to do your singing in the shower, this course in Gaelic Song is for you! Mary Ann will cover many categories of song, including work songs, popular chorus songs, and the family dance-music speciality – puirt-à-beul. There’s a focus on bringing the songs to life through their background, history and transmission, and while most of the teaching is by ear, written texts, translations and melodies will be available, and students are welcome to audio-record the sessions for personal use only.

Tutor: Mary Ann Kennedy - Glasgow Gael Mary Ann’s earliest memories are of a home filled with song. A classical training - and a brief diversion running the BBC’s Gaelic news service – led to a career as musician, broadcaster, composer and producer, now based in Lochaber with husband Nick Turner at Watercolour Music. A founder member of Cliar, ‘All-time Best Album’ winners at the Scots Trad Music Awards, she’s twice winner of the Lorient Concours International de l’Harpe, double Gaelic Mòd gold medallist, and a Saltire Awardee. In 2017, she released her debut solo album, ‘An Dàn’. The follow-up, ‘Glaschu’, is out this month. Text.
