T20 Scottish - Making the tune your own

5-days from Sat 6th to Wed 10th April - 4:30pm

Merchiston Courses - Classroom Space

This course will focus on a choice selection of Scottish tunes which fit under the fingers of harpers and which were written during the last few centuries.  We’ll learn the tune and basic accompaniment first, adding in suitable ornamentation and then working through some harmonic development, learning how different chord choices can enhance the arrangement. We’ll also cover how to make each tune your own, adding inner lines, intros and outros, themes and rhythms with some improvisation work around the melodies.  Initially taught by ear, a written outline of the music will be given at the end of each day.

Tutor: Corrina Hewat - Corrina is a harper and singer and Principal Scottish Harp Tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is also composer, musical director, recording artist and musical collaborator. Corrina coordinates the award-winning Celtic Connections Festival series of public workshops each year and also leads Harmony Singing workshops across the UK and is a strong advocate of collective music making and its ability to connect and heal. She happily lives in a very musical community on the outskirts of Edinburgh and keeps on writing, playing and making music while continually promising to release another book of tunes.
